- In Şemdinli district of Turkey’s southestearn Hakkari province bordering Syria, after a long while amid clashes and security operations, shopkeepers reopened their doors.
A security opperation has been launched on August 14 in Şemdinli district, after the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants started performing ID checks and digging trenches to block armed vehicles of Turkish army. The district has been in midst of a terror alert, after the clashes flared up between the Turkish military and PKK militants in southeast.
On early August 21, shopkeepers reopened their doors after clashes, started working after cleaning their shops. The residents who have fled their houses after sucurity tension have also started to resettle, while life returns to normal in the region.
Semdinli, in fact, was the district where an attack on the army on Aug. 15, 1984, has triggered insurgency where more than 40,000 lives, mostly Kurdish, have been believed to be killed.
