2,400-Year-Old Tombs Turned Into Warehouse In Touristic Fethiye

– In Fethiye district of Muğla, ancient tombs dating back to 4th century B.C. are used as warehouses by residents of a neighborhood in the region.

The Amintas tombs in Fethiye are among the ruins that had survived until today from the ancient site of Telmesso of the Lycia Civilization. Also, the Amintas Imperial Tomb is acknowledged the symbol of touristic town of Fethiye.

Despite its historical significance, these tombs have been used by the Cumhuriyet Neighborhood’s inhabitants as warehouses where they hide their lumbers and wares. In the 1,5-meter-long and 2-meter-wide tombs, that can remain cool during summer and warm during winter, people keep collecting wares ranging from plastic bottles, to carton boxes, even rubber tires.

The ugly images from the ancient area have stirred debates since many foreigner and domestic tourists flock to the area every year.

Meanwhile some of the tombs have been covered with bushes and grass, where dogs shelter. As some of the residents planted olive oils surrounding the ancient tombs, tourists merely recognize the historical artefacts.
