Excavations End In Ancient Soli Pompeiopolis In Turkey

– The excavation works for 2015 in ancient site of Soli Pompeiopolis has recently ended in Mezitli district of Mersin.

In the site known as on the of the most important port cities of the Roman era, excavation team brought to light various artefacts from a villa from the Late Roman Era to 800-year old sesterces within the 17th round of works this year.

A team of 100 people led by Professor Remzi Yağcı from 9 Eylül University has worked in Soli Mound, Roman Villa and the Roman street line with columns, unearthing artefacts from Cilicia period dating 3,000 years back in history.

A structure predicted to be an archaic temple used in 6-5 century B.C. was brought to light, along with ceramic findings, kitchen appliances, sesterces from 3th century A.C., a structure reminding of a villa, and an apsis channel system dating back from Geometric to Byzantine eras.

“The ancient treasure” of ancient Soli Pompeiopolis is one of the most important historical sites in Turkey, which also eyes the UNESCO World Heritage list.
