Ship Laden With Ammonium Sulfate Runs Aground In Dardanelles Strait

– The Panama flagged cargo ship “İbrahim Konan” loaded with ammonium sulfate has run aground at Dardanelles near Gallipoli province, when crossing to Egypt from Russia.

A rudder failure has caused the groundling of the 109-meter-long ship, local reports say. The incident has taken place around 3 am on July 1st, when the 5,581-gross ton ship was unable to manoeuver at a challenging zone of Dardanelles and went aground.

The local officials started a rescue operation, reporting that no leaking was observed after an examination.

On June 27, a similar accident causing a potential disaster has occurred at Dardanelles strait, and the cruise ship “Celestyal Crystal” sailing from Greece towards Istanbul with its 853 onboard passenger has collided with “STI Pimlico”, an oil tanker loaded with petroleum naphtha .
