Roger Federer suffered a surprise 6-2 7-6(3) defeat to Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters while world number one Novak Djokovic survived a scare against Gael Monfils.
Berdych, who beat Federer twice last year, gave a reminder to those watching on the centre court of his quality as he marched into the semis. Federer, who had won 24 of his previous 26 games in Cincinnati, never got to grips with Berdych's powerful serve as he suffered another setback following a third-round exit in Montreal last week.
